My Experience Organizing with Blue Future

By Sophia Garcia, Blue Future Summer and Fall Progress and Change organizer

When things started to shut down in March my plans for the year, like many others, became very uncertain. As the pandemic grew worse and the President continued to downplay COVID-19, I knew I had to actively work to vote him out beyond just going to the polls myself. Blue Future’s seasonal Progress and Change Programs was the perfect opportunity to stay at home safely and work hard every day to elect Democrats up and down the ballot across swing states. Graduating with a degree in Comparative Politics I always knew I would work in democratic strengthening and elections across the world; however, I couldn’t have imagined all I would accomplish and learn with Blue Future and fighting for U.S. democracy.

When I started with Blue Future at the beginning of Summer 2020 as part of the Summer for Progress and Change Program, I knew very little about how campaigns worked. I had previous volunteer experience in phone-banking and canvassing but never for such an important election as the November 3, 2020 election. I was lucky enough to stay on with Blue Future for their Fall Program and Winter Program and have learned so much in the last 8 months. My time with Blue Future has consisted of so much more than making important calls in swing states for the 2020 election. I learned about the true impact of phone banking/canvassing and the importance of speaking to voters across the state.

Blue Future’s impact goes beyond improving my phone banking skills. In the last few months, Blue Future taught me and my peers about campaign finance, lobbying, digital organizing, social media relations, how to increase youth engagement, how to run zoom trainings, ways to stay connected in politics during a pandemic, and so much more. While there is always more to learn, Blue Future has prepared me to work on different campaigns in the U.S. and given me valuable skills I know can be used in elections around the world. They have also prepared me with a newfound self-confidence to be a leader both in the political world but in my everyday life.

Blue Future’s slogan is “connecting young people to progressive campaigns” but they truly do so much more. Blue Future prepares young people to LEAD a progressive future. They truly show the value in supporting young people with PAID fellowships to promote a brighter, fairer, bluer future. Being able to hear and learn from their incredible staff, advocates across the country, elected officials, professionals, and experts in the campaigning world, and different campaigns across the US has prepared me to continue to fight for and lead a more progressive future. During the Fall for Progress and Change Program I had to move overseas for grad school but thanks to this wonderful organization I was able to continue to speak to voters and fight for democracy from Spain. I am forever proud to have been part of so many amazing programs that have played such an important role in electing Joe Biden and then flipping the Senate in the Georgia Special Elections, moving America in the right direction. I believe you get what you organize for, and Blue Future proves that with every campaign they support.
