Open Letter to President Biden from young people nationwide about strengthening our democracy

Dear President Joe Biden,

In order for democracy to work for all of us, it must include us all. Young people, especially young people of color, turned out in record numbers to deliver our democracy and elect decision makers who will hear our voices. While some politicians continue to use their voice to silence ours, young people are uniting, across race and place, to say now is the time to strengthen our democracy.

To get us there, your administration must prioritize comprehensive democracy reform, both through the legislative process and executive actions. This starts with championing the passage of the For the People Act.

Young people have always led movements for social change and this moment is no different. Young people joined together to elect you and now we’re united in our demand for a more equitable, accessible democracy where everyone counts, no exceptions. The For the People Act is how we get there.

The For the People Act is a once-in-a-generation democracy reform package that will expand and protect voting rights for all, end partisan and racial gerrymandering, get dark money out of politics, and restore transparency and accountability in our government. This legislation will pave the way for real change on issues that young voters care about.

Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Schumer have delivered on their promise of advancing meaningful change to our democracy. The For the People Act was reintroduced in the House as H.R. 1 last month, and the Senate has announced that it will introduce the bill as one of their first orders of business.

During your campaign, you had also expressed support for actualizing policies that create a full, participatory democracy as a first priority in 2021 and beyond. Now is the time to act and build on your long history of fighting to end the dominance of big money in politics and protecting the right to vote by using the bully pulpit of the President to push these reforms forward.

Although there were some improvements to voting access in 2020, we also saw corruption in action throughout the last election cycle. Some voters — particularly disenfranchised communities such as communities of color — dealt with broken voting machines, stood in line for hours, and were turned away from casting their ballot without clear explanation — all while trying to stay safe from the pandemic. The For the People Act would lock in and expand on the positive changes of 2020 and help correct decades of voter suppression issues.

Young people of every color, income and zip code voted in record numbers for a president who believes our democracy works best when every vote is counted and every voice is heard. We now have an opportunity to realize the true promise of democracy — a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

President Biden, it’s time to move our country forward to live up to its democratic ideals. It’s time to pass the For the People Act.

Young people across race, gender, background and income are coming together to sign on to this open letter to President Joe Biden demanding he take steps to strengthen our democracy. Add your name so we can use our collective voice to advocate for a democracy where all of us count, no exceptions. We will be sharing the letter with officials in his administration and we want to show them just how strong the progressive youth movement in America is!

We encourage any young person to sign on to this letter to President Biden by filling out this form! Our collective voice is powerful!
